Mayco is an alternative rock project from Bristol, England, driven by raw emotion, vulnerable songwriting and an uncompromisingly personal approach to music. A largely self-taught musician and producer, Mayco writes, records, produces and mixes everything independently from his bedroom.
Drawing influence from Nirvana, Deftones, Basement, Superheaven, nothing,nowhere and Fightstar, Mayco blends alternative rock, shoegaze, grunge and elements of nu-metal into an immersive, emotionally charged sound.
Exploring themes of mental health, depression, anxiety, loneliness and real-life hardship, Mayco's music confronts darker experiences while leaving room for melody, light and glimmers of hope. Mayco makes their introduction with “IM NOT OKAY”, a debut single that blends the weight and intensity of alternative rock with elements of grunge-gaze, shoegaze, emo, hardcore and nu-metal.
Unfiltered, atmospheric and emotionally charged, “IM NOT OKAY” explores the struggle of concealing what is happening beneath the surface. At its core, the song is built around a simple but deeply human contradiction: telling people you are fine while privately confronting pain that feels increasingly difficult to escape.
The track opens with intimate memories of family and childhood, immediately establishing a sense of emotional history. The first verse recalls hearing a mother cry and a father offering words of possibility — “son, you can be anything you want to be” — before the song turns inward with its central confession: “I lie, and say I’m fine when I’m not okay.”
That recurring line becomes the emotional anchor of the track. Rather than offering an easy resolution, “IM NOT OKAY” embraces uncertainty and uses its shifting imagery to create a dreamlike, almost disorientating atmosphere. Drawing influence from artists including Nirvana, Deftones, Basement, Superheaven, nothing,nowhere and Fightstar, Mayco brings together the weight and intensity of alternative rock with the hazy textures of shoegaze, the grit of grunge and elements of nu-metal to create a sound that feels both familiar and distinctly his own.
At the heart of Mayco's music is vulnerability.
